With an 8.9in screen we’ve become so used to, the Inspiron 910 will come with SSDs up to 16GB, have the Intel Atom under the hood, up 1GB of RAM, a 3-in-1 card reader, three USBs and a 1.3MP webcam.

You’ll able to get either Windows XP or Linux editions when it rears its head, supposedly in the States on 22 August. That’s this Friday. And if Gizmodo’s right, the entry level model will cost just $299. So expect it to start at an Acer Aspire One mtaching £199 when it arrives here.

According to Brazilian site odontopalm.com, the Dell ‘E’ (aka the Mini Inspiron) netbook will be officially be called the Inspiron 910 and launch in the country on August 22nd. Aside from the 1.6GHz Atom CPU, buyers will have a choice of 512MB or 1GB of RAM, 4/8/16GB of flash storage and either WiFi b/g or Draft-N. Bluetooth and 3G will be options, as will 0.3 or 1.3-megapixel webcams.

OS will be a choice between Windows XP or Ubuntu. Also confirmed is the omission of the function key row, as well as there being no modem. Ports include 3 USB, 1 VGA, a multifunction card reader and ethernet.

The site suggests that the Brazilian price – which is apparently heavily inflated with local taxes – will be around $740. However commenters have suggested this would tally with a roughly $300 US price.

Although Compal Electronics’ notebook ODM volume has not shown as much growth as previously expected, the boost coming from Dell’s E series netbook shipments may help the company achieve its annual shipments goal of 32 million units in 2008, according to sources in the notebook industry.

Dell’s 8.9-inch E series netbook is expected to provide Compal with monthly shipments of around 250,000 units, while the 10-inch model, which is scheduled to be launched in October, is expected to have monthly shipments of around 400,000-450,000 units.

Compal only shipped around 6.33 million notebooks in the second quarter this year, but with Dell outsourcing more than two million notebooks to Compal in the third quarter – and with the Dell E series netbooks’ potential shipments being around 1.8-2 million units, Compal may be able to maintain its original shipment goal for 2008, noted the sources.
